Dr Uwe Nerlich

INTERNATIONAL security advisor Dr Uwe Nerlich is a founding director of the Centre for European Security Strategies (CESS) based in Munich, Germany.

The centre provides an international network for research and consultancy supporting governments, international organisations, industry and the media to understand and meet strategic threats.

It draws on expertise from many countries and disciplines seeking to integrate strategic, operational and technical approaches and deals with international crises, environmental and natural disasters and terror scenarios through analyses, policy studies, scenario development, risk assessment and tool development.

Dr. Nerlich was a senior vice-president of IABG, and a member of the SWP directorate (now the German Institute for International and Security Affairs) which advises the Bundestag and the federal government on foreign and security issues. He has brought experience as chairman of a number of international and national research organisations such as the European-American Institute for Security Research, the European Strategy Group (ESG) and he was a council member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London from 1978 to 1987.

He studied philosophy and mathematics in Frankfurt, Germany, and Cambridge, England, and has held fellowships at Harvard University and the Stanford Centre for Advanced Studies in the United States.

His publications cover a wide range of international security issues with a focus on strategy development, geopolitical assessments, decision-making in security organisations, risk-assessment, control of nuclear weapons and materials, national defence and security policies and crisis management.

He is currently working on global strategic issues, energy security, the impact of emerging global powers such as China and India, and corporate security planning and decision-making in oil and gas industries.
